I mean, check out the song titles!! It reminds me that rock n' roll should be FUN!!! This is one thing sadly missing from the scene today. Well it's been lacking for some time now. At least in the 80's there was some fun to be had in certain circles.

I really just posted this one for anyone who remembers him from back in the day. Hope it brings a smile to your face. And anyone else wanting some piss and vinegar in their fun - give this a spin!

Track listing

"Destroy All Lawyers (3:00)"

"I Wanna Race Bigfoot Trucks (3:45)"

"Ain't High Falutin' (3:16)"

"Shane's Dentist (2:04)"

"Rabies Baby (3:30)"

"Put A Sex Mo-Sheen In The White House (4:18)"

"Star Spangled Mojo (Trad.) This store was modeled after their success HMV stores in the UK - many of which had small stages and hosted live appearances on a regular basis. I didn't know much about Hothouse Flowers at the time, other than that they were from Ireland and were getting some good press. I think I had seen a video, that might have been it. But I figured I'd check it out anyway - something new & exciting (or at least I hoped at the time....).

Well I was not disappointed! It sure was quite a change to see a band play live in a music store. They seemed to be enjoying themselves, and the crowd seemed to dig it too. I got their CD "People" soon afterwards and began a big fan of theirs. I saw them a few months later in a club setting and it was a great night too. I remember getting a great pic of me & my friend Sandy with two of the members - still have it hanging in my hallway here! A big thrill back then.....

Anyhow, this was a purely acoustic set (as was the in-store custom). Sound quality is excellent on this (direct from soundboard). I would give it a 10/10! Songs played are as follows:

1) Kansas City

2) Mountains

3) Hallelujah Jordan

4) Willie

5) Big Fat Heart

6) It'll Be Easier In The Morning

Listening to it today brought back some great memories of the times (ahh.....the 80's!!).

Anyhow....check it out:

These are MP3's at 320K

MEGAUPLOAD

Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt - live in Zurich, Switzerland 2/01/10

Wow - Lovett & Hiatt together in an acoustic setting.....now how sweet is that!??
Saw them a few weeks ago at Casino Rama (Ontario). Wasn't sure how is was gonna go in such an "area" style hall (1500+), but I need't have worried. Just two great singer/songerwriters doing there thing......and it was great!!! Really - how could you go wrong?

The week after show, just for kicks I thought I'd sniff around to see if anyone happened to capture it. Then I found this show - ironically almost a year old to the day. Was really please when I found out the quality was so high on the recording - a 9+ out of 10 in my books.

NOTE: this show was recorded in flac format. Despite a request from original recorder/poster, I have converted it to MP3's. My hats go off to him for all his great work on this set. However, I feel music in meant to be shared with others (especially such a great show as this....!) and I know friends who would enjoy this. So the deed is done.......enjoy....! I know they did a lot of road work in Canada, and had a pretty strong following here. But I don't think they could ever make much headway in the States. In my books, their "Human Frailty" (also released 1986) is a classic. I saw them live a few times - if I'm not mistaken, both times at RPM.

I guess I must have had this set hanging around on cassette for years....really don't remember. But it is yet another CFNY (Toronto) presents "Tuesday Night Live", so the quality is very good. But there is just something about the performances on this one that really make it rock!

I went looking for a jpg of the back cover, but found this site instead - it pretty much covers all the info you'll ever need: ALBUM INFO

Pretty much all the shredders you could ever wish for are here = Brad Gillis, Yngwie Malmsteen, Richie Kotzen, Paul Gilbert, etc......as well as some ace vocalists = Dee Snider, Joe Lynn Turner, Vince Neil, Lemmy, etc, etc.

My personal faves are : "Mr. Crowley" (w/Tim Owens & Yngwie Malmsteen), "Crazy Train" (w/ Dee Snider), "Desire" (w/ Lemmy), as well as the old softie "Goodbye to Romance" (w/ Lisa Loeb & Dweezil Zappa).

If you're looking for a nice HEAVY slice o' RAWK........go for it:

These are MP3's at 192K
MEGA

U2 - 1983 US Festival 5/30/83

Well I thought I was pretty much done with U2 boots. I have a handful of my favourites here, that I play on a regular basis. I mean how many does a fan really need!? OK, don't answer that..........

I tripped across this one in my travels recently, and snagged just to check out the quality. I was surprisingly impressed by both the sound quality (8+ at least) and the passionate performance here. Guess I shouldn't really be surprised by the passion. I mean I've seen this band 7-8 times (from Boy tour at Ryerson Theatre onwards), and they have never once disappointed. We won't get into any discussion here about their last album........(as it sits collecting dust on my shelf......).

Don't seem to be getting ANY hits on this U2 stuff on my blog, but check it out if interested. What can I say that hasn't been said before about Jerry Lee Lewis???

As a guy who grew up on 80's rock (both classic hard rock and "new wave"), I never had much time for this old boy. Of course, as I matured myself (wiser?) and started to learn more about him, my curiousity was peaked. I stumbled across this album one day, took it home, played it weeks later.....and was really blown away by it!! This ROCKS THE HOUSE from the word go, and doesn't let up until the house lights come up. Bottom line....if you are a fan of rock n' roll, and never heard this before, you owe it to yourself to check it out!!

Here's some reviews I found on-line today that pretty much capture my feelings:

1) "......but then "Mean Woman Blues" comes on, and Lewis plays the piano with such ferocity that it actually sounds digitally manipulated. NOW we're talking.

Live at the Star Club might just look like a run through of a few polite, mum-friendly rock'n'roll standards, but it rocks likes a bastard. The sheer power - it borders on the point of chaos at times - is enough for me to even overlook Jerry Lee's habit of putting his own name into his lyrics. Quite a few of these songs may be pretty badly dated, but energy and youth is timeless, and Lewis has got both by the bucketful. At times it's like listening to completely different songs rather than just cover versions.

This is the kind of album that could turn a rock'n'roll hater to the dark side. Essential."

2) "The KILLER in all his glory, proving to everybody that he wasn't washed up in the least! An utterly incredible performance - this is rock'n'roll 101, people. Anybody that starts a rock band nowadays should be forced to listen to this before recording anything or playing live - I would imagine that 99.9% of the so-called artists out there would throw away their instruments in disgrace, realizing that they had no right to try to rock! And can you say CHARISMA?"

Rock steady gang!

These are MP3's @ 192:

MEGA

Cheap Trick "Cheap Trick" (1997 on Red Ant label) REPOST

Real odd release things in so many ways. Band signed to Red Ant in hopes of reviving a sagging career by partnering with a younger/hipper/connected label. Unfortunately the timing couldn't be worse.....Red Ant went bankrupt just 3 weeks after this was released. Yet somehow I was sent a promo way up here in the frozen north (from our U.S. exporter Alliance). I remember being so down about the music business in general that time in my life....."nothing new" "everything sucks", etc etc. Not the best time to be testing out a new CT album.....

Surely enough, when I spun it I was not impressed. On first listen I remember digging "You Let A Lot Of People Down" and not much more. I might have played it once after that, then I promptly handed it off to my best pal Alex.

About a 1000 years later (well about 13 to be exact....)......Alex asks me if I can find this one on the Net for him. Somewhere along the way, he'd lost/given away/misplaced his CD. I download it for him, and send him tracks. A day or two later, Alex (w/impecable taste as always!) says he loves the album, etc etc. So I listen to trax again, and I'll be damn......THIS SUCKA ROX!!!!
Can't believe I passed on this one the first time around.

Anyhow, enough of my blabbin'......if you're here, ya came for this......

Rock Steady!
MP3's @ 192K
MEGA

Foster and Lloyd "Foster and Lloyd" (1987) REPOST

Radney Foster and Bill Lloyd's first release from back in 1987. Seems like a long time ago. Not sure what happened to Bill Lloyd, but Radney Foster was still kicking around in 2002. I got his "Another Way To Go" CD, and it's got some great stuff on there as well. As for his current activities, I'm not really in the loop on them.....

But this Foster Lloyd album is a real solid effort! I still pull this out on a regular basis and really enjoy it. As far as I'm concerned, there is not a bad cut on the album. I remember a 90's trip with my good friend Alex down to see our bro Mike in Windsor. We played it in the car for Alex, and even he was impressed (and that's not an easy thing to do!). So we ended up playing that one almost non stop when rolling around town. Great memories.........

Back in '87, I was really into the "new music" as well as my classic rawk but I was interested a bit in country. A co-worker told me to try this one on for size. I really dug it, and bought my own CD. It is "country" in vibe I suppose, but it's really about great (pop) songs, deep (sing along) grooves, as well as heartfelt perfomances. What more could you want??

As a rule, I don't post legit releases. But after some research it looks like this one is no longer available. Damn shame/no surprise really in this day and age. I was going to post that Radney Foster CD too, but it's still available to buy.

Check it out!
MP3's at 192K
MEGA

Various (1993) - New Stuff Two

Here's a little blast from 1993! Used to be a Canadian mag called IMPACT back in the day. Every month they would give out a "new music" sampler with the magazine. Didn't last for long, but you could always find a few new things of interest on there.

On this edition, I fell head over heels for Randy Bachman's "Prairie Town", featuring none other than guest Neil Young on vox/guitar. Story went that they knew each other for a short time back in their Winnipeg days, and Randy wrote this one with Neil in mind. They laid it down together, and a while later a video shoot was scheduled. Neil showed up for the shoot, despite the fact that he was battered and bruised from a hang gliding accident a few days before. But he didn't want to let Randy down......what a trouper! I never did buy that Bachman album, but still get off on "Prairie Town".....worth the price of admission here alone.

A few other interesting acts here: The Lawn, Snow, 13 Engines, Rhymes With Orange, The Phantoms, Colin Linden, as well as The Tea Party.

P.S. I have a few other volumes here too if anyone is interested......?

Enjoy.
MP3's at 192K
MEGA

Van Halen - Pacadena Civic Auditorium Dec. 20, 1977 (REPOST)

Interesting early set here from these Monsters of Metal! Their classic debut album was released in Feb. 1978 so this show predates that event by a month or so. Entire band is flying in fine form here - especially mouthpiece Diamond Dave and shredder Eddie (no surprises).

After some research, I found that in some places this set is listed as Dec. 20 and in others it's Dec. 15. Regardless, the year is 1977. My trax were ripped from a vinyl LP (remember those kids!?) that I borrowed from a friend at work. To top that off, it had an old school cover printed in glorious black & white, and it was just titled Van Halen "Live". Looks likes it's been issued since on CD under several titles - "Civic Pride", "The Atomic Punks" , etc.

It was a real kick to get such an early recording after some many years of yearning for one. I'd rate the sound on this at 8 to 8.5 - rough in a few spots but with a real nice crunch to it.
So here is it gang.......Rock on!

MP3's at 192K
MEGA

Bash & Pop - "Friday Night Is Killing Me" (REPOST)

Yet another one of those "used to have on vinyl" releases......got this back in 1992 and was pleasantly surprised by it. Well I enjoyed this one myself. Sound quality is excellent (9.5 in my books). I assume this was recorded for live release by band/label, or maybe even King Buscuit but I couldn't find much info on it.

Recorded on tour for their "Union Jacks" album (their 3rd). I much prefer their first two to that album, but some really tastey stuff here. Funny, they must of had some good tour support as they even have a backup female singer here. Sure wouldn't happen in this day and age.

Another one for those stuck in the 80's!! Got to admit I just love the sound of those real drums, along with that classic Les Paul/Marshall combo here. Singer John Waite's voice is shaky at times but no big deal.

Enjoy....these are MP3's at 192K

MEGA

Roger Daltrey - Live 12/04/85 Constitution Hall, Washington, D.C. Found in fairly rare (for that period anyway) solo performance from 1985. He was promoting his excellent "Under A Raging Moon" album, so includes several songs from it as well as a few Who classics (surprise surprise).

Sound quality is pretty much a 10, as it was recorded for the King Biscuit series. When I saw the track listing on here, I just couldn't resist!

Again, mostly audience recordings here so quality varies but still a damn fine listen. Some of them you really wish had been a most pristine quality. But then again, that's the way a good boot should be.

My faves on here: "Miss Sarajevo" with Pavarotti (I think released legit at some point?), "People Get Ready" with Maria McKee (LOVE HER!!), and "When Love Comes To Town" with Keith Richards (how could this NOT be great?).
Enjoy....

These are MP3's @192K
MEGA

U2 - Jesus Was A Cool Guy (REPOST)

An interesting little boot I mailed away for (!!) many years ago. It's been a long time since I played this, and really enjoyed hearing it again.

For the fantics in the crowd, subtitle on this is "100% pure Live Acoustic Sound/Vol.2". And before you ask, no I don't have Vol.1.

Interesting collection here of fairly rare acoustic or rearranged versions, including some radio appearances. As expected, quality is all over the road but most of this is pretty listenable.

My fave tracks = "Lost Highway", "Springhill Mining Disaster" and "Can't Help Falling In Love". As a side note, you get a real feeling from this collection the band was having fun, and had a real loose sense of humour out there most nights. I wonder if they haven't lost that recently?? Although I must admit I haven't seen the latest tour.....

Anyhow, enjoy......
These are MP3's @ 192K
MEGA

Teenage Head - Live at Heatwave Festival 5/23/80 (REPOST)

Well now here's a real gem from days gone by! Special thanks to my friend John at Nathan's Rock Moat (I snagged from him!). Wasn't really concious of it's existance, so to stumble across this was a real kick.

After downloading, as I was listening and thinking that the crowd noise is awfully loud. As well the audience seemed a bit rambuntcious for 12 noon! After doing some surfing, I found many comments along these lines. General conscenous is that the broadcasting station (likely CFNY? but not sure) must have added this audience track in post gig. I have to say it's a bit of a distraction. So I tried a few things on ye old Sound Forge here - the usual, remove ticks/pops, and then EQ. I pressed a CD, tried it in the car, and it was still way too much! So I tried again a week later, and these are the results. It was a pretty fine line between trying to purge that audience noise and keeping the edge of the high end (not to mention the vocals).

By all means, if there's someone who can polish up better - have at it! But I'm pretty happy with the results. Brings back some great memories from my youth!

These are MP3's:

MEGA

P.S. Check out the poster at top and note that Teenage Head aren't even listed on there. They were a last minute "surprise" act (in the primo 12 noon slot!???).

Ace Frehley - Live at Pops, Sauget, Ill, 02/26/08 (REPOST)

Again, this set has been posted for some time now in many places. I decided to add today just so my rockin' buddy Grant can snag. Special thanks to my friend Joe from New York for sending me this on disc. I actaully saw Ace a few nights after this show, at a place called the Bears Den at Seneca Casino, Niagara Falls (USA). I met Joe at that show, as he was seated next to us.

Ace only did about a week's worth of shows, and we felt pretty fortunate to catch him in such a small venue. Capacity at Bears Den is only 475 (!!) - talk about intimate! And the band just KICKED ASS from the word go. Ace was actually upright and sober, and he surrounded himself with younger guys who really knew how to deliver.

They stuck to a nice mix of Ace solo stuff, and (of course) some Kiss classics. It was pretty powerful to hear that material after so many years. He was working on his new album (coming next month I think) but they didn't play any new stuff that night. I can safely say that everyone there that night was completely blown away!! And to top it all off, the tickets were a whopping $30 for that show (!!!!!!). I call that a bargain......

Enough of my yaking.....check it out.....

These are MP3's @ 192K

MEGA

The FLYING PICKETS - Live @ Albany Empire (1982) REPOST

Here's yet another one that survived many years on a trusty Maxell tape, then made into a CD. I bought the vinyl one day on Yonge Street, as I had heard some of their stuff on CFNY. They play it for laughs here in several spots, but these guys can really deliver vocally!

Here's the track listing on this baby:
ALBANY EMPIRE
I thought I had lost a few tracks when I taped the LP to cassette, but doesn't look like it.

I play this every once & a while when I want a COMPLETE change from the norm! Or when I want a good laugh.......great stuff though.

These are MP3's at 192K
MEGA

TOM ROBINSON - Live at the El Mocambo (Jan. 1985) REPOST

TOM ROBINSON - Live at the El Mocambo (Jan. 2008)

Great little live set here! Yet another from the mighty CFNY, and the fabulous El Macombo! I never realized how many shows I have from there.

Didn't really know much about Tom Robinson back in the day, other than the usual (you know....HE'S GAY! ha ha ha). I think my buddy Alex bought the Power in the Darkness album, and after a few listens, we didn't care which way he "swung"......we just knew the album rocked. Full of spirit, conviction and some damn good songs (that stand up to this day!).

I truely think that he was one of those cats (yes, yet another one!) that if "people" (aka American Midwest) actually got to HEAR his songs, they would probably dug them. But you know how it goes.....especially way back in the day......."Glad to be Gay"??? I can hear the radio stations now "oh, that one is destined for the circle file"......sad.......

Anyhow, for those hipsters on the block......ENJOY!! Not too sure if this one is out and about, but I'm hoping the fans will sniff it out and dig it.

Very strong sound quality on this - likely a 9+. Again, another gem I had on the trusty Maxell 90 min. tape, and made into a CD this decade. Loving it......

These are MP3's at 192K
MEGA

Max Webster - Live In Ottawa 11/11/77 (REPOST)

Max Webster - Live in Ottawa 11/11/77

As requested.....a great little Max set from 1977! All props to original poster - sorry don't remember who's blog I snagged this from. This is primo Max at their best......a radio broadcast done by CFNY Toronto. This station is now one of those damned awful "new music" type things, but back in the day it was a pretty cool place to catch both cutting edge and new music (as in NOT HEARD BEFORE, NOT major label, NOT from California, etc). Can't recall when I started listening to this station, but in the 80's it was THE station to listen to in Toronto. Obviously, they delved into some pretty cool things in the late 70's too (and hats off to them for it)!

These are MP3's @ 192K

MEGA

Various "Some Gravy For Ya - Vol. 1" (REPOST)

Various - "Some Gravy For Ya - Vol 1" (live on CBC Radio Q show)

This is the premier issue of this series (ha ha ha) and features 3 tracks each from Adele, Skydiggers, Joel Plaskett, The Arkells, and Serena Ryder. These performances are all done live on the fabulous CBC Radio Q show (so I may hear from them....although I doubt it). If you're not familiar with this show - do yourself a favour and check it out sometime! They talk to guests from all over the world in all arts (film, books, music, theatre, etc) during the week. On Friday they usually have an artist play live in the studio, in a primarily acoustic format. Personally I dig some of the versions here a lot more than the studio versions. I started collecting the podcasts last year, and snag it whenever I hear someone of interest. Look for Vol. II someday soon (if I don't hear from Big Brother at CBC before then!?)........

P.S. Sorry I have NO INFO about when/where these were done. I snagged this last year from an EP Newsgroup, burned the CD, leant it to a friend. Many months later (after his back surgery), he says he can't find original, but has made a copy of it. I get copy back, but of course, all tags on MP3's are lost.

Anyhow.....some of these are just same old Christmas tracks u'v likely heard before. But there are a few that show the "real" Elvis. that is the man in control, a real rockin' true-to-life musician, not the candy ass actor/Vegas lounge singer he became (or should I say the Colonel forced him into becoming!?). Check out track 6 Merry Christmas Baby if you need proof. Needless to say, that one wasn't recorded during the day with the RCA brass breathing down his neck. You can be sure it was a late night session, quite possibly after a few beverages, etc. I'd love to find more of this gritty blues type stuff! I'm positive it exists, and sure I'll stumble across someday......

These are MP3's @192K

MEGA

Concrete Blonde "Still In Hollywood" (REPOST)

NOTE: as a general rule I do not post any major label CD's, but I'm pretty sure this one has long been delete (a shame really) as I bought it in a clear out bin for $4.99 a few years back.

For some reason I was thinking about this one the other day. I always get a good laugh when I hear "Chew You Up and Spit You Out" which is basically the song "Still in Hollywood" but "features drummer Harry Rushakoff (impersonating a relative of his) signing off asking questions about the validity of fulfilling the dream of stardom". This bit breaks me up every time, as it does the rest of the band here too.

The rest is an "odds & sodds" type collection - demos, aternative and live versions. This night was broadcast live on Q radio on May 24, 2007. There were other artists on this show, but not to my taste (Alanna Myles, etc). But Goddo, Honeymoney Suite and David Wilcox are my fav raves (besides Max Webster which I posted earlier here). Goddo was not overly tight, as they do not play live together much at all these days. I think Goddovitz lives in Calgary now. Honeymoon Suite were rockin', as they had done some road work before this show. As for David Wilcox ? What can you say?? The dude is a legend! Has to be 60 if he's a day, blind as a bat from what I hear, and no doubt hearing like Pete Townshend. They don't play often either, but here he is ripping it up for the fans! Unfortunately I missed part of his set, so it starts about 1/2 way through "Hypnotizing Boogie". He's on my very short list of "definitely need to see live before I kick off" acts.

Sound is pretty good - around 9 I would say - signal wavered at points, but still solid.

These are MP3's at 192

MEGA

Johnny Cash - Live at Glastonbury 6/26/94 (REPOST)

Note: date incorrect on graphic above - this show is from 6/26/94 (thanks to Cortex for correction on this).

Country legend JOHNNY CASH playing UK's legendary "hip" "alternative" festival Glastonbury?? For those non Canucks, Q107 is Toronto's premiere classic rock station. One who can take pride in it's efforts to break a ton of Canadian acts from back in the day (Rush, Max Webster, Triumph, David Wilcox, Santers, etc). As well, Max's main man Kim Mitchell now DJ's on the afternoon drive show, and still pushes the Cancon hard.

This show was broadcast live on, of course, Q107 radio May 24, 2007 from the Docks nightclub in Toronto. Also on that bill were Goddo, Honeymoon Suite, David Wilcox, etc. I just pulled out another disc here with those acts on it which I will post in next few days.

Sound is decent, probably an 8.5 to 9. Max is in good form, although a bit ragged on the vocals at times (not surprising after 30 years!?). Overall a fun blast from the past!

These are MP3's @ 192K
MEGA

Kim Mitchell - "Hello Cleveland" (REPOST)

As promised, Kim Mitchell live May 1984. Man they really rocked the house back in the day!

These were all snagged from Newsgroups back in 2005, so all props go to orginal posters. I also used Cool Edit Pro to tweak/EQ these tracks. Having said that, some are a bit rough, as majority are likely audience recordings, with the exception of the CBC sessions.

My faves = a completely kick ass cover of "Train Kept a Rollin'" (Ontario Place 1990), as well as a lovely version of "Get Back Again" (CBC Studios 1992). Again, I'm sure all this stuff has been done to death is Hip collectors circles, but for those looking for a raw live collection from them - this will do the trick.

MP3's at 192K
MEGA

The Tragically Hip "Takes Toronto" (live 1987-1989) REPOST

Kind of a cool collection of live Hip stuff in Toronto from 1987/88/89. Originally broadcast on the might Q107 sometime in early 2000(?). I did a CD up back in the day, and then "remastered" in in June 04. I played it several months ago and felt I could do a much better job on it today. So I fired up the old Sound Forge and am happier with results now.

Sound is a bit rough - not sure if these were all soundboard recordings (I assume they were). I'd give it a 7 to 7.5. I was surprised Q107 actually put this on the air. Obviously, it must have been approved by Hip management, as it was produced by the Rock Radio Network. Something for the collectors anyway.

After a bit of research, I see there is more Hip boots out there than I can possibly even wrap my head around. But if you're looking for some raw early stuff - this is the ticket! I also have another CD with more great early stuff. I'll be posting that in the next week or so.

These are MP3's at 192K

MEGA

Kim Mitchell Band - Live in Oshawa 1984 (Much Music "Big Ticket") REPOST

I downloaded this a few weeks ago - played it once and enjoyed it. Pulled it out again this week, and thought "wow this is killer stuff!", so I thought I'd post here just for kicks.

To give proper props: I downloaded the audio & the blue cover from SOUNDABOARD (thanks Atticrock). As well, a dude named TITUS posted the black graphics (on left above) on Soundaboard. I liked the look of that too. Thanks Titus - sorry can't find yer link.

What can you say about the KMB? Bit of an odd career....they came out of the shoot rockin' like mad, then went on to some serious success in radio popland, only to fade away. I always thought it was kind of sad that the masses will only really remember "Patio Lanterns" when they left us a rock classic in the "Akimbo Alogo" album. IMHO, the line up on that 1st tour was the best there ever was of the KMB. I saw them a few times on this tour, and it was a kick ass blast!

Anyhow, this set was recorded for a Much Music "Big Ticket" special in 1984 in Oshawa (sorry don't know the date). Having said that I suppose it's been around forever on video/audio - all new to me though. Sound mix is excellent with a nice, clean bite to it. I'd give it a 9 to 9.5 sound quality rating.

I thought the KMB's WMMS Cleveland broadcast (May 1984) was fab, but this comes close to rivalling that! I'll probably end up cooking up that one for this spot soon too.

P.S. Funny note: about 10 years after this, I took my niece to see Sharon, Louise and Bram at Kingswood, and who should be playing drums? Paul De Long!! Ah.....the life of a Canadian Musician, eh!?

These are MP3's at 192K

MEGA

The Alarm - Live at RPM Club (Toronto) 3/01/86 (REPOSTED)

Wow - been a long time since I played this one.....and I really dug it! Yet another set from the mighty CFNY. Talk about promoting new music - that station was on it (well for a while anyway).

I did same old procedures on this cassette - made waves, tweaked a bit with EQ in Sound Forge, but this one really didn't need much work. It's got a has a nice raw edge to it. I'd say the sound quality is probably an 8 to 8.5. Performance is very energetic with some great early material here. I think I saw them at same club the following year. Ironically when I went to get a link to RPM, it now says it's a "dance club" (pass the barf bucket) called The Government. To it's credit, they do still have current "live" acts there regularly. Most of whom I've never heard of.....(says the old man). I was lucky enough to catch Ian Hunter there about 4 years ago, and yes, he still ROCKED the joint! I don't think many folk even know/remember who the hell he his. Damn shame because his last few albums were damn good.

Again, I'll get a track listing up in a few days. Just wanted to get the music out there now.

MP3's at 192K
MEGA

Neil Young (solo) "Visits Wonderland 8/26/89" (REPOST)

Yet another memorable Kingswood Theatre show at Canada's Wonderland (Maple, Ontario). Captured on my once trusty Sony Walkman.

Up to this point, I'd never really been a huge Neil fan. Sure, I knew the hits and all, but never really bought into the whole "genius" myth. Then I witnessed him walk out on this HUGE stage in front of 15,000 frothing fans, armed with just his acoustic guitar and his songs. To say I was blown away would be an understatement!!

Sound quality on this is OK for an audience boot. I'd probably give it a 6.5 to 7, but it has a nice vibe to it. Another warm summer night outdoors with some a great performer. How can you beat it?

An odd note about this show.......just a few months ago, I happened to mention this boot to a friend of mine that I had know for many years (hey Jacko!). He flipped as it turns out he was at this show too! Needless to say, I burned him a copy and he got off on it.

MP3's at 192K

MEGA

The Rainmakers - Live at the Copa (Toronto) 11/27/86 REPOST

Well here it is fans......it's only taken me 23 years to get around to actually "remastering" this set. I suppose remastering is far too fancy a term......this is from a cassette - I made wav files, then used Sound Forge (thanks Alex!) to clean up and EQ as best as I could. I'm pretty happy with the results though. Considering it's an audience tape (me trusty olde Sony Walkman), I'd give it a strong 7 to 7.5 in terms of sound quality.

As you can hear, me and my friends totally dug the set! If I'm not mistaken they were opening for a dude name Henry Lee Summer. He was famous for aprox. 1.5 minutes in the summer of 1986 with a song called "I Wish I Had A Girl". Anyway........the Rainmakers came, and they ROCKED!!

Love these guys - wish I could find more live stuff from them, but can't seem to sniff any out.

To my old friend Scott - this one's for you! Rock Steady!!

MP3 files @ 192K
MEGA

The Waterboys - Live at the El Mocombo 12/06/84 (REPOST)

Hey now - yet another gem from the mighty CFNY archives. Can't remember when they actually broadcast this show, but I don't think it was on actual gig night (12/06/84). But who are we to complain?

Unfortunately I wasn't at this show, as I had just discovered their classic "Pagan Place" album a month or two after it's Canadian release. Can't even remember where/when I first saw them. I think it was at the Phoenix? And I have some fond memories of them opening for u2 at Massey Hall a few years after that. Oh what a night.......not to mention Mike Scott solo at Trinity Church in Toronto. What a beautiful venue to hear such inspirational music!

Anyhow, this El Mocambo (Toronto, Ontario) show from the Waterboys is likely out there someplace as a boot. Might even be on glorious wax!??

In terms of sound quality, I'd have to say it's an 8 1/2 pushing a 9. Much cleaner mix than the P. Furs show. So here is it 4 U........these are MP3's at 192K.

These are MP3's @ 192K
MEGA

Psychedelic Furs "Elmo Insults" (live at the El Mocambo 7/15/81) REPOST

"Aren't you allowed to dance or anything? Well if you've ever been to a show in Toronto, you knew what he meant.

I must admit I had never followed this band at all. I knew some of their stuff, but never bought an album. So I'm not 100% certain on songs titles here. However I really dug the energy and spirit of this gig. It show is from 1981, yet I don't think it was broadcast until late 1980's or early 1990's. This is another from my collection that somehow survived on cassette and was burned to CD much later. Broadcast by the once mighty CFNY in Toronto. During the 80's this station was the forerunner in promoting all kinds of new music, both local bands and from overseas. Unfortunately during the 90's and beyond, it morphed into yet another soulless, waste-of-space- on-the-dial corporate entities.

These are MP3's at 192k:

MEGA

Joe Jackson - Live at Kingswood* Music Theatre (Canada's Wonderland) 6/13/86 REPOST

It was a lovely warm summer night...........one we'll remember for a long time......my best friend Alex, Tina and some of her friends.......

Joe had just released his double set "Big World". At this stage in his carreer, he had a mighty big bag of songs to choose from, so it was exciting to see what he was going to pull out next. The sound that night was just amazing! And we had great seats about 15 rows back, just slightly to the left of center, with a great view of the stage. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed by the tape of this show when I got home. So here it is - check it out! It's somehow survived all those years, and was transferred onto CD in early 2000's when I figured out how to use a PC. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

As far as boots go, this is an audience tape (Sony Walkman), and I would I would still rate the sound at 8/10. There are some rough spots, but overall a great listen. I know there are purists out there who will critize.....but the hell with the them.....IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC! Back in the day, audience stuff was all we ever could scronge up. And when we did get find some, it was pretty crappy for the most part.

*Kingswood Music Theatre - once the primo concert spot in the Toronto area before the Ontario Place Forum (R.I.P.) got eaten by Molsons - part of Paramount theme park, called Canada's Wonderland in a place they call Maple, Ontario, just north of Toronto. I saw many shows there in the 80's (Big Country, The Cure, David Lee Roth, Neil Young , etc. Just a great place to see a show - fabulous stage and PA system. This particular show was probably the best sound I have ever heard live - perhaps rivaled only by Nick Lowe at the Copa Club in Toronto (sorry forget the date on that one.....).

These files are MP3's at 192K........

PART1MEGA

PART2MEGA
